Overview
BuzzFeed is a leading digital media company headquartered in New York City, delivering news, entertainment, and viral content to a global audience. The platform reaches millions of users worldwide across web and mobile applications.
Challenge
BuzzFeed’s legacy frontend code had become difficult to maintain and scale. CSS and Sass structures were inconsistent, making collaboration and design updates time-consuming. A solution was needed to streamline frontend architecture, improve maintainability, and support consistent design implementation across teams.
Solution
Pakufi collaborated remotely with BuzzFeed as part of the Sass & Frontend Architectural Refactor Team. The team conducted a large-scale refactoring of legacy CSS and Sass code, creating a clear, modular architecture. A live styleguide was developed using BEM methodology, providing an early example of this approach in large-scale media websites. This system improved design consistency, reduced development friction, and enabled faster deployment of new components. Strong remote communication and coordination were key to the success of the project.
