Ubuntu Chess: Our First Project and a Meaningful Pivot for Pakufi

- Pakufi Team

Ubuntu Chess was more than just our first completed project.
It marked a meaningful shift in direction for Pakufi — one rooted in delivering high-quality digital work while creating real opportunities for learning, mentorship, and values-driven collaboration.
This project allowed us to turn our mission into practice while supporting a purpose-driven initiative with care, structure, and professionalism.
A Shared Vision from the Start
From our very first conversation with Vipua Rukambe, founder of Ubuntu Chess, we felt an immediate alignment.
Ubuntu Chess is a community-led initiative grounded in collective thinking, sustainability, and connection. This collaboration was never just about launching a website, but about building something meaningful together.
From the beginning, we focused on respecting the vision, practical constraints, and long-term goals of the project.
From Consulting to Delivery: A Thoughtful Approach
We started with a consulting phase to fully understand the project’s goals, audience, and limitations. Together, we explored:
- The most effective structure and scope for the website
- Technology choices aligned with sustainability and long-term use
- A clear content and user experience strategy
- A feedback process that stayed collaborative without becoming overwhelming
From there, we moved into UX and content planning, translating workshop information and values into a clear, story-driven single-page website.
The technical scope included:
- WordPress design and development
- Layout customisation and responsive behaviour
- Content integration and formatting
- Infrastructure setup and basic performance optimisation
Throughout the entire process, communication remained open and transparent, allowing space for iteration, questions, and refinement.
“From the start, there was a strong sense of trust and genuine interest in the work. The quality of the work and communication was excellent throughout the process. I felt truly understood.”

Mentorship in Action: Supporting a Junior Developer
Mentorship sits at the core of Pakufi’s mission, and Ubuntu Chess became a real example of how we work.
The development was led by Arbisola Pali, a junior developer from Albania, supported closely by a senior mentor. For Arbisola, this was her first experience working on a live website for a real client.
“Before this, my WordPress experience was pretty basic. I had never worked on a live site, and I was nervous because everything I touched actually mattered.”
— Arbisola Pali
Our mentorship approach focused on clarity rather than micromanagement. Decisions were explained, changes reviewed together, and responsibility shared intentionally.
“Having a senior developer supporting me made things much easier. I learned why things were done a certain way, not just how to do them.”
— Arbisola Pali
This balance allowed the project to succeed while creating a strong learning experience for emerging talent.
Results That Went Beyond Expectations
The final result exceeded expectations, not only technically but also in how the collaboration felt.
“The junior developer did an outstanding job, and it was clear this was more than just another project. There was real care and curiosity behind the work. The social values of the team influenced my decision and made the collaboration even more exciting.”
— Vipua Rukambe
For us, quality is not just about code or design, but about how people work together.
Why This Project Matters
Ubuntu Chess reflects the future we are building at Pakufi.
It showed that we can:
- Deliver high-quality digital products
- Support junior developers with real, paid, real-world experience
- Build trust with purpose-driven clients
- Centre ethics, care, and human connection in our work
Ubuntu Chess was not just a project. It was a signal that our approach works.
Looking Ahead
We are proud of what was built and deeply grateful for the trust Ubuntu Chess placed in us.
If you are a purpose-driven organisation looking for an ethical development partner, or a junior developer seeking real-world experience through mentorship, we would love to connect.
This was just the beginning and we are excited about what comes next.
